Hi Tony, the “Now” checkmark will only turn off if you set the date to some other time via the Date/Time dialog. I’ll see if I can make that a little clearer in the next release.

Hi Jack, well, your donation comes from buying the software. If you think it is worth more than the asking price, you’d always be welcome to make an extra donation via my paypal account.

But the biggest “donation” is that you enjoy the software, show it around and hopefully bring some additional folks to the Distant Suns “fold.”

Not likely I’m afraid. I’ve worked on Symbian before and didn’t find it all that pleasant. Plus there is so much more to do on the iPhone stuff that I just wouldn’t have time for the next year or so.

Hi Greg, right. The PC version is no longer sold or supported. There are a number of other good PC based astro programs out there to fill in the void. Although you don’t need an iPhone to run this, an iPod touch works just fine and is what I do most of my dev on.

Suggestion. In the next version, for iPhone 3GS users, is it possible in your software to open the iPhone camera and to overlay the sky over this image. The movement of the sky will be synchronize to the iPhone movement using Lat, Lon, Alt, Pitch, Roll and Azimut. It would be a great utility. Thanks

Hi. It’s great app. I’ve been using the lite version for months and I just bought the full version v2.0.1.
I like the clock and its animation. However the app crashes when I use the >> or << clock animations and the calendar reaches the current month and day. For example If I start the animation with 03/08/1970 as a start date it crashes when the date gets to 24/12/1970 while fast forwarding or 24/12/1969 while rewinding.

    I hope it helps.
    Thanks anyway.

Hi Mike, many thanks for your hard work on Distant Suns. I remember playing around with a demo in the Windows 95 days. And it was awesome to see that it’s ported over to the iPhone. Just one thing, though. I remember in the old windows versions, there used to be this guidebook for that had facts for every day of the year. I forget what you called it. Any chance of incorporating something like that into future versions of the app?

Thanks for the nice words. I am always glad to have one of the “old timers” back in the fold. I have been thinking of doing the Nightly Grabbag, but thats 365 new writeups to add, so an awful lot of work. It is on the list, but way down for the time being.

Hi Keith, go to Settings, and you’ll see “Notifications” near the top. Tap on that, and you’ll be able to control each of the different messages.

I elected not to do a “touch and identify” mode mainly because the data density is so high most of the time, your finger will likely hit a half dozen objects, so DS won’t know exactly what you want. The little crosshair is less “natural” but much more precise.

Hi, Mike. I love DS – it’s one of my showcase “look what you can do with an iPod Touch” apps – but there’s one small UI thing that I wish I could turn off. When I tap a Sun/Moon/planet shortcut button, the sky pans to that object and then *zooms in*, so I have to manually zoom back out again. If you could make that auto-zoom optional, that’d be fantastic.

Yes, the full version will work on 2.2.1. I keep one of my iPods at that level just for testing. I’ll check in about DS-Lite, it shouldn’t require 3.0 to run. I probably had something set wrongly here.

  31. proxima Says:

    Hi Mike,

Brilliant app. One thing I was really looking forward to when I saw the screenshots on the app store, was the ability to overlay the stars onto the actual sky as seen through the camera. This is something that was not possible with pocket universe, so you incorporated the “twilight planner” mode that makes this possible. However, twilight planner mode does not turn to landscape mode when i turn my phone, but the normal mode does. Can you please make twilight planner also handle landscape, as currently the labels don’t turn, and the compass still thinks you’re holding the phone in portrait mode, which doesn’t update orientation and position.

I’m really looking forward to an update on this. Good job ;)

Though android is a baby right now (5.2%) of the market, remember it doubled its market share in 3 months and is expected to pass iphone by 2012…. very likely considering its open nature and the amount of manufacturers taking it up and also verizon about to start promoting it… please consider android!!..

but yes lovely app on the iphone… almost makes me want to change my nexus for an iphone hehe and im not even a great fan of astronomy :)

  42. proxima Says:

Hi Stuart, I have had a lot of requests for an Android version. Not sure if that will ever be though, as I use all of my free time on the iPhone one. Plus Android software is all Java, so it would mean rewriting everything, not just the iPhone specific stuff.

You can always get an iPod Touch for yourself. Reconditioned ones from Apple are pretty cheap, and there is no mucking around with AT&T.

    Hello,
I am a professional astronomer and I have bought the iPhone app which I enjoy a lot. I have to point out that the parallaxes listed in the info boxes are too small by a factor of 1.35 (an average value). However, the distances quoted are accurate. I suggest that you check the database being used and correct those parallax values !
    Cheers,

    Hi,

I was surfing the iTunes Store (for work not pleasure if you can believe that) and I came across your app. As something of universe enthusiast (aren’t we all?) I have to say it looks so beautiful and it’s a great idea. Sadly I don’t have an iPhone but if I did I would certainly get Distant Suns.

Anyway, I represent Oxford University Press and was wondering if you would be interested in licensing some of our content, specifically ‘A Dictionary of Astronomy’. It’s got biographies on eminent astronomers like Ptolemy and Hubble and also entries on Big Bang Theory, galaxy evolution etc. I thought it would sit quite nicely with this app.

If you’re at all interested do get back to me.

    Keep it up!

I just have to say that GT 3D is one of the greatest apps I have ever seen on the iTouch. I can’t stop playing with it. Too bad, because as a developer I should be working on my own apps :-)

Feature Idea: I’d love to be able to position the camera on the “surface” of a planet and watch the movement of the moons overhead. I’m not asking for atmosphere and excruciating detail, just the image of transiting moons from the planet surface (or vice versa). I got this idea thinking how cool to watch Charon from Pluto (i.e. stationary in the sky, a permanent fixture as the universe passed behind :-)

Fervent Hope: Will there be an iPad version of GT 3D. I dream of GT 3D on the big screen :-)

    Keep up the good work,
    Tim

I have an iPod touch so I can’t  use the DS compass feature.  Would it be possible to add an option to  manually calibrate the compass? People can use a real compass to find the four cardinal points and then calibrate the DS compass accordingly.

If the compass feature worked on the iPod, then I could build a mount to  mount the iPod  to my telescope, and use DS as computerize “push to” system.

Another option would be to mount the iPod to the telescope first, then calibrate the DS compass by aiming the telescope to two stars.

Regarding the moon, two little things:
    - when trying to select it on the sky application, the data button does not work (it prompts to “select an object first”). Not critical at all, of course, since such data are available from the Planets’ list, but…
    - The distance reported: is it the actual current distance or an average all over a moon orbit cycle?

    A few questions.

Can distance be displayed in km or ly or ls where appropriate?

Will the distance to the moon be fixed. Currently it is 0.00 light seconds. That’s too close.

It’s nice to know the sun is HOT! even on cold cloudy summer days in June. Will you be telling us more about the Sun?

And finally, is there any way to see the names of the planets in the What’s Up display, when the planets, and the names, overlap.

This is the first app purchased for my iPad, and I better say that I bought iPad just for your app. I still remember back in 1987 (aged 16) when I bought my, still in operation, A500 that DS was one of my favorites! Back then I had a dream just like you: a mobile cosmos in my pocket. Fortunately for us amateur astronomers the dream took only some 25 years to become reality. Thank you for your efforts to bring it to our hands. Thank you.

    Nikolakas

Ps. A small request. Is it possible to add a switch to hide the sky below horizon?

Hi Nikolakas, thanks for the wonder sentiments. It is always nice to hear from the Amiga guys. Your request for the horizon has been made by another couple of folks, so it is at the top of the list for 3.1 iPad and 2.2 on the iPhone.

For the IPhone/IPod app (distant suns 2) could you please add the positions of comets and asteroids (with information about them) in the 3D sky!?!?! Could you also maybe add the position of satellites in the 3D sky????? And one more thing, could you also add the times for the meteor showers and the information?!?! Thank you sooooooo much for making SUCH a great app!!! It has helped me a lot when I am trying to find things with my telescope!!!!!

And could you also please add times for solar eclipses and lunar eclipses and the location???? This was definitely the best buy ever for my iPod!!!! Thank you soooo much for making this!!!!!! EVERYONE SHOULD GET THIS APP!!!!!

I appreciate Weather Planet but will the scale ever become larger than half the U.S.? As a photographer that appreciates shooting on cloudy days, a larger, at least statewide scale, would help in planning trips.

Thanks for the kind words. Eclipses can be handled via push notification. Real accurate localized predictions are best fetched from http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse.html

Hi I love your apps but I really think they should be upgraded for the hi-res screen of the new iPhone4 especially DistantSuns3 which is sold as “HD” in the iTunes store! They’d be so beautiful without the ragged edges around the planets caused by the low res rendering.

That is definitely in the works right now. Just got in some of the final artwork.

The “HD” is the standard term use for iPad software, not retina display stuff. It does look very nice on the ‘4.

I cannot figure out how to get the constellations’ mythology information. Where do I go?
    Thanks,
    Larry

Go to the constellation list, and click on one of the > buttons. It will show you the constellation’s artwork. Click on Data and takes to the specifics.

I cannot find any information on upcoming meteor showers. The Perseids Shower is not listed in the August events and I have not received any alerts about it.

    Howdy:

I’m enjoying your fine app, but was surprised to go to the “Other : Monthly Highlights” area and find no mention of the Perseids ( or any other ) meteor showers.

It would be nice to know when these are coming and where best to look for them based on my location and time, etc.

Otherwise, keep up the great work!

How to open and read the event alerts message when the program running?
There is no toolbar can do this matter.

    Hello,
Am using Version 2 on a 2nd gen iTouch. Love it! Any advantage to upgrading to version 3?
    Thanks!

I just received a notification about a half price offer tonight on version 2 and 3 but the iphone app store still has it at full price.

    Hi Mike,

I am using DS3. Outstanding program. I am a professional pilot and often fly long flights over the pacific at night. My iPad with DS3 is my permanent companion.

One thing I miss (and would make the software perfect), is the inclusion of meteor showers. Another option, which would be great: being able to set the elevation at a specific viewing location :-)

    Thanks for this fantastic software!

Sorry for not having meteor data in the app. Since the dates of the peak vary from year to year, I decided to use push notifications to report on major showers. That’s actually very clumsy as it turns out, so since enough folks have commented on this, I’ll add in shower tables before the next big one in November. Thanks for taking the time to write.

The Apple’s push notification system is ending up being very clumsy for those kinds of alerts. I am going to try and refine for future use.

Oh by all means! DS 3 is a melding of Distant Suns 2+Grand Tour. So instead of just watching Jupiter from earth you can travel out to it and examine it up close. However it prefers a little more rugged equipment than the Touch 2G, although I do use that for some testing.

Hope you were able to check back on this. It looked good to me, but maybe the price change didn’t migrate to the particular server that was showing you that particular page.

Great! I love hearing about how people use the thing. Must be lovely in the cockpit at night. Meteor showers coming up in the next few weeks.

Can’t you offer us a way to modify constellation lines and fonts? Those items are really hard to see.
